12 channel 1 CTThe term "PQ 9A" most commonly refers to a Single Phase Power Factor Controller (PQ 9A), an electrical instrument used to monitor and manage power factor, often featuring alarm capabilities. It is a 144x144 mm device designed for industrial electrical systems.

Key details about the PQ 9A Power Factor Controller:
  • Manufacturer: Nippen Electrical Instruments Company.
  • Function: Single-phase power factor control and management.
  • Voltage Range: 11-300 V AC Line-to-Neutral (L-N).
  • Features: Often includes 1P-1CT (1 Phase-1 Current Transformer) configuration, stage controls, and alarms (e.g., 12 or 16 stage options).
  • Application: Used for optimizing electrical efficiency, primarily in industrial settings, priced around ₹19000 per piece.
Note: In some medical contexts, "PHQ-9" (Patient Health Questionnaire-9) is used for depression screening, which is a different term.

An Automatic Power Factor Controller (APFC) is an intelligent microprocessor-based relay used in commercial and industrial settings to maintain the electrical power factor near unity. It continuously monitors the system and automatically switches capacitor banks on or off to compensate for reactive power, avoiding utility penalties and increasing energy efficiency.
How an APFC WorksThe controller connects to the main electrical system via Current Transformers (CTs) and potential transformers.
  1. Measurement: It constantly measures the phase angle difference between voltage and current.
  2. Calculation: If the power factor drops below a set target, it calculates exactly how much capacitance is needed to correct the phase shift.
  3. Switching: It automatically commands relays or contactors to switch pre-sized capacitor banks IN or OUT of the circuit in a sequential manner.
